The Howard Hughes Residence: PS ModCom Iconic Home Tour + Optional Cocktail Reception

Nestled into the hillsides of the Araby Cove enclave, with Lautner’s Elrod house perched above, sits a truly unique 1957 midcentury house that was once owned by the eccentric movie mogul and aviator billionaire, Howard Hughes. Renowned for his reclusiveness, this hidden gem provided the perfect getaway for himself and his then wife and actress, Jean Peters.

The house is built on multiple levels, accessed by floating staircases, and is oriented toward the valley floor below. Walls of glass provide a 220-degree view of the desert, mountains, and city. The front exterior walls are whitewashed brick, and the living room features post-and-beam construction. Each of the three bedrooms overlooks the valley, and each has an ensuite bathroom, as well as a full poolside bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers. The three interior bathrooms have all their original details and the kitchen with its original ‘mint green’ Western Holly stove and oven.

The current owner, Jeffrey Steenberg, bought the house in 2019 and undertook a massive four-year renovation project. Completely rebuilding the outside property, as well as restoring many of the interior vintage details, providing a glamorous, Modern, resort-like experience, complete with a chef’s alfresco kitchen. Being a history enthusiast, it was of prime importance to keep much of the original essence of this unusual house. In keeping with the original intention, Jeffrey followed the same shapes, curvatures, and lines that define the home’s character.

A tour of this house reveals some interesting history, which you too can now discover!

The Poolside Reception is hosted by Jeffrey Steenberg and includes cocktails, wine, and hors d'oeuvres.
